The white, the gold or the ivory
Finding the perfect wedding gown can be one of the hardest tasks for a bride. There is so much to consider – style, shape, embellishments, neckline and skirt details.
Even deciding the colour is not as simple as picking “white” when you can choose between ivory, champagne, peach, diamond white or gold.
Some Territory brides have ignored traditional whites and gone for dramatic looks including burgundy, black and white and recently a local bride wore a canary yellow gown with a red ribbon to match her bridesmaids’ red dresses.
Darwin dress designer Sarina Cowcher, owner of The Big Day bridal boutique, advises brides to steer clear of trendy fashions and go with classic designs from different eras.
“You want to be able look back and not see a dress that has dated within five years,” Sarina said. “If you pick a style from a classic era you can alter it slightly or add embellishments to suit your individuality.”
Popular styles of the moment include halter neck mermaid style, strapless sweetheart neckline with A-line bustle skirt, structured pleated bodices and Grecian style dresses perfect for beach weddings.
Local wedding boutique owners say brides should try dresses on if they like them, or even try something on in a style they have never worn.
A clothes hanger never does the dress justice and it can be transformed once the bride slips into it.
