Emaly Josif
My husband-to-be kept the secret from me for two weeks. He had asked my mother and my father (they are separated) and explained to them that he wished to ask for their blessing prior to asking me.
The night he asked me he had, unbeknownst to me, been off work from 12md on the Friday (he’s the Manager of a large company so this is a real effort). He then proceeded to make the preparations.
When I received the phone call that he was taking me to tea I was very happy. He had been making a few trips across the Territory so I was feeling a little lonely and a romantic restaurant dinner was just what I needed before his next trip away.
When I hopped in the car after finishing work, my hiking boots and some socks were in the foot-well. I looked in the backseat and there was an esky and two mats. When I asked what was going on, I was told to take off my heels and put on my boots as we were going for a hike. Mind you it was raining in Alice Springs at the time so I was less than willing to go hiking in my nice work skirt and white top but I didn’t want to spoil what he had planned.
We pulled up at Flynn’s grave and he took the esky I took the mats. Let’s just say it was an event and a half getting to the lookout on Mount Gillien through the rain that was getting heavier, in my skirt that was now drenched and my shirt that was now see-through. When we reached the lookout - it was very beautiful. I still hadn’t quite grasped why he had to drag me through the rain. So we attempted to sit down and start the picnic from the esky but the rain continued to get heavier, finally he said "Do you want to just go and eat this somewhere else?" I wanted to stick with his plan so I said no, but he said it was alright and that he just needed to do a quick wee.......
Taking a long to time relieve himself I called over to him what was wrong....nothing, nothing came the reply. So when he came back to me and asked me to close my eyes and follow him to the face of the lookout I started getting butterflies but still told myself that I was getting my hopes up and it wouldn’t be fair on him - he was just being romantic! Then when we stopped and he asked me to open my eyes and all my dreams had come true. The rain had stopped and the wind had died. He was on bended knee next to the proposal written out in rocks and sticks and highlighted by candles. I don’t remember much of those next two minutes of my life but I know when he went quiet looking at me expectantly I said ‘Of course I will!’.
We then collected our things and raced down the mountain back to the car. Just as we made it the heavens opened which I hope means that God was crying tears of joy. Following the rained out proposal we ate the picnic in the car on top of ANZAC hill, watching the rain fall down on where we had just been. The surprises continued when he presented my favourite wine shipped in from NSW plus strawberries and chocolate for desert. We then went to a suite he had hired at Lassesters hotel where he had thought of everything for a beautiful night together.
My fiancé was upset that the proposal wasn’t the way he had planned. He had been timing the sunset so he knew just when to take me there and that it would be perfect in every detail and was disappointed the effort he went to didn’t pull through.
Little does he know every time I look at my engagement ring I remember the most perfect proposal and saying yes to the man I will be with for the rest of my life.
Down to the last detail my Territory man of five years definitely preformed a romantic proposal.
